이름(名) Name

아기가 출생하면 부모나 조부모가 아기의 이름을 짓는다.
name: When a baby is born, parents or grandparents name the baby.

자(字): a name of an adult
남자는 관례(冠禮)를 하고, 여자는 혼인을 약속하면 계례(笄禮)를 하고 자(字)를 지어 준다. 이름을 부르는 것을 피하기 위하여 자(字)를 짓는다. 관례를 할 때 빈(賓:주례자)이 자(字)를 지어준다. 관례를 하지 않아도 부조(父祖)가 자(字)를 지어주기도 했다.
During the wedding ceremony, the officiant gives the name of an adult. Even without a wedding ceremony, father(父祖) wrote the characters for them.

호(號) nickname?
본명이나 자 이외에 쓰는 이름. 허물없이 부르기 위하여 지은 이름이다.
Ho (號): You can think of Ho (號) as a nickname that anyone can use with ease.

자(字)와 이름(名)을 피휘하게 되니 호(號)를 지어서 부르게 되었다. 호는 누구나 부를 수가 있기 때문이다. 호는 자기가 지을 수도 있고 친구나 스승, 제자가 지을 수 있다. 호는 예술가들이 자기 작품에 이름 대신에 쓰기 시작하여 문인, 정치가 등 사회활동을 하는 저명인사(著名人士)들이 호를 지어서 사용했다.
Since the names were avoided, they were called with a Ho (nick name). Because anyone can call it. The Ho (nick name) can be built by oneself or by a friend, a teacher, or a disciple. Artists began to use names instead of names in their works, and famous figures such as writers and politicians made their names and used them.

자와 호를 가지게 된 원인은 이름을 소중히 여기는 존명사상(尊名思想) 때문이다. 그래서 성인(成人)이 된 사람의 이름을 마구 부르지 않는다.
The reason for having a letter and a name is because of the thought of honoring names (尊名思想). That's why Koreans didn't call people by the names of adults.

아명(兒名) child name
호적에 올라가지 않고 아이 때 부르는 이름을 아명(兒名)이라고 한다. 아명은 아이가 건강하게 잘 크기를 바라면서 항렬에 따라서 짓지 않고 천하게 이름을 짓는 경우가 많다.
A name that is called as a 'child name' without being listed in the family register is called an alias. In the hopes that the child will grow up well and healthy, they often name their names lowly rather than according to the ranks.
